Insert the Copyright Symbol in Google Docs (with Shortcuts)

You can insert or type the copyright symbol in Google Docs files using the menu or by using different keyboard shortcuts (for Windows or Mac devices).

In this article, we'll review 4 ways to insert the copyright symbol in a Google Docs file:

  1. Use an Alt shortcut by pressing Alt and then enter a number sequence (Windows)
  2. Use an Option shortcut by pressing Option and then enter a character sequence (Mac)
  3. Use a Substitutions shortcut
  4. Select the symbol in the Insert special characters dialog box

First, you will need to log in to your Google Drive account at drive.google.com and then open the document in which you want to insert the copyright symbol.

1. Inserting the copyright symbol using an Alt keyboard shortcut (Windows)

To insert the copyright symbol in a Google Docs file using an Alt keyboard shortcut:

  1. Position the cursor in the document where you want to insert the copyright symbol.
  2. Press Alt + 0169 on the numeric keypad.

If the sequence doesn't work, press NumLock on the numeric keypad.

2. Inserting the copyright symbol using an Option keyboard shortcut (Mac)

To insert the copyright symbol in a Google Docs document using an Option keyboard shortcut:

  1. Position the cursor in the document where you want to insert the copyright symbol.
  2. Press Option + G or Option + 00A9. On some Mac devices, you may need to press Option + 1.

3. Inserting the copyright symbol using a Substitutions shortcut

To insert the copyright symbol in Google Docs using a Substitutions keyboard shortcut:

  1. Position the cursor in the document where you want to insert the copyright symbol.
  2. Type (c) and press the Spacebar.

This entry has already been added in Google Docs in Preferences. To view or delete the entry, select Tools in the menu, Preferences and then click the Substitutions tab.

4. Inserting the copyright symbol using Insert special characters

You can insert the copyright symbol, as well as other symbols, using the Insert special characters dialog box.

To insert the copyright symbol in a Google Docs document using Insert special characters:

  1. Position the cursor in the document where you want to insert the copyright symbol.
  2. Click Insert in the menu. A drop-down menu appears.
  3. Click Special Characters. A dialog box appears.
  4. In the Search box, enter the word copyright. Alternatively, select Symbol from the Symbol drop-down menu or draw the symbol you are looking for in the Drawing area.
  5. Click the copyright symbol.
  6. Click Close (X on the top right of the dialog box).
